DVD, Blu-ray and CD Litho Printing
Offset Lithography is the best method of reproducing photographic or continuous tone images for volume CD printing or DVD printing.
In 2007, Alpha Duplication became the first company to bring CD litho printing on recordable media to the UK. This proved very popular and demand has been so great that we have since doubled our capacity.
Our CD litho printing systems are fully automated and allow us to print CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black) onto a white base. This can then be printed with an additional, screen printed spot colour using the same machine, allowing you to have both continuous tone images and a Pantone colour on the same disc.
CD Litho printing – How it works
The Litho printing process (or offset printing process as it is also known) requires the creation of four plates produced from the artwork to be printed onto the discs, one for each of the ink colours cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK). Each of the litho plates transfers an image using its corresponding colour, onto a rubberised sheet which is wrapped around a metal cylinder within the printing machine mechanism. The image is in turn transferred from the rubber surface onto the receptive surface of a CD or DVD passing through the printer. The combination of the four base colours gives the resulting printed image exactly as presented in the artwork file. If the original artwork file contains any white areas, a white ink base layer is applied to the disc before the litho print process is started when the CMYK coloured areas are added.
All our discs are printed alongside a calibrated Fiery proof to ensure that they have the very best colour matching available.
Artwork files to be used with the CD litho printing or DVD litho printing process need to be as high resolution as possible, at least 300dpi. An Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator file is ideal. If you are at all unsure about the quality of your artwork and whether it can be used for this printing process just ask to speak to one of our design experts who will be happy to advise you.
Artwork can be supplied via disc, email or FTP. Please speak to your Sales Account Manager for further details.
